The most common question about Valheim's 1.0 release (September 9, 2026) is whether a long-running server world survives it. The answer is more interesting than yes or no, and it is worth settling with your group before launch day rather than after.
The short version
Your world still loads and your saves are untouched. But new content only generates properly in parts of the map that nobody has explored yet. Iron Gate's own recommendation is to start fresh for the best experience.
What that means in practice
The Deep North sits at the far north of every Valheim world. Whether your existing world can give you a proper one comes down to a single question: has anyone sailed up there?
- Nobody has been north — you are in good shape. The region generates as new terrain when someone first arrives.
- Someone sailed up and looked around — that map is already generated in its old form. The new biome content will not fill it in cleanly.
Exploring is what locks terrain in, not visiting a biome or killing anything there. A world where players stayed in the southern biomes for two years is in a better position than a young world where someone took an early boat trip north.
Your options
Start a fresh world
Iron Gate's recommendation, and the only way to guarantee a clean Deep North plus correctly generated 1.0 content everywhere else. The cost is your builds.
Keep the old world and add a second one
Valheim identifies a world by name, so a server can hold more than one and switch between them. Groups who are attached to their base often run the old world for building and a fresh one for the Deep North, moving characters between them. Characters and worlds are stored separately, so your character keeps its skills.
Carry on regardless
Perfectly valid if your group is not fussed about the Deep North specifically. The rest of 1.0 still reaches your world.
Moving an existing world onto a server
A world you have been playing locally is a set of files, so it can carry on as a server world. Take a copy before you upload anything, and make sure everyone is out of the game while you do it.
Good to know
Back up your world before the 1.0 update lands, whatever you decide. Valheim keeps automatic backups on its own schedule, but a copy you took deliberately, at a moment you chose, is worth more than one the game happened to take.
There is no public test branch for 1.0. Iron Gate decided everyone experiences it at the same time, so you cannot try the update against your world early.
