Valheim 1.0, the Deep North and Crossplay
Valheim's 1.0 release (September 9, 2026) takes the game out of Early Access after five years, adds the Deep North as its final biome, and brings PlayStation 5 and Nintendo Switch 2 alongside the existing PC and Xbox versions.
Iron Gate have confirmed crossplay between all platforms at 1.0. That changes what a Valheim server is for: a group split across a PC, a PS5 and a Switch 2 can share one world, and a dedicated server is what keeps that world running when the host goes to bed.
Your server updates itself. When Iron Gate push a new build, your GG Host server picks it up without you doing anything.
Playing Across PC and Console
Valheim runs its multiplayer on two different backends, and the one you pick decides who can join.
The default Steam backend is Steam-only: PC players see the server, console players do not. The crossplay backend routes traffic through a relay instead, and anyone on any platform can join — by IP and port, from the server list, or with a join code.
The dedicated server program itself is a Windows or Linux application. Consoles play on Valheim servers; they do not run them. If your group is part console and you want a world that stays up, renting is the straightforward way to get one.
Crossplay ships switched off — that is Valheim's own default, not a choice we have made. You can switch it on yourself from the Commandline Manager in your control panel, and the server restarts to pick it up. Do that before you hand the address to console players. Full connection guide.

A self-hosted Valheim server means installing the server tool, editing a start script by hand, and forwarding ports on your router unless you switch to the crossplay backend. Renting skips all of that, and the world stays up when your PC does not.
Do You Need a New World for the Deep North?
Short answer: your existing world keeps working, but it may not give you a proper Deep North.
Iron Gate's guidance is that a world made before 1.0 still receives the new content, but biome generation only works correctly in areas nobody has explored yet. If your server's world has already been sailed out to the northern edge, the Deep North there will not generate cleanly. Iron Gate recommend starting fresh for the best experience.

Mods at 1.0
Valheim has never had official mod support, and 1.0 does not add any. There is no Steam Workshop, and no console mod support either.
Mods for Valheim are community-built, and after a base-game update of this size they need time to catch up. Iron Gate have said outright that they cannot guarantee any mod will work with 1.0.
If your server runs mods, plan for a gap. Take a backup of your world before updating, and expect to run unmodded for a while.

How many players can join a Valheim server?
Up to 10. Iron Gate confirmed that Valheim 1.0 stays a 1–10 player game, the same as it is now.
Can PlayStation, Xbox and Switch players join the same server as PC players?
Yes. Valheim 1.0 supports crossplay between all platforms. The server has to be running the crossplay backend rather than the Steam-only one. On your GG Host server crossplay is off by default and you switch it on yourself from the Commandline Manager, so do that before your console players try to join.
When did Valheim leave Early Access?

Will my existing world work after the 1.0 update?

Do I need to forward ports for a Valheim server?

Does Valheim support mods at 1.0?

Can I move my existing Valheim world onto a rented server?
